How to Register Your Trademark in the United Arab Emirates

Trademark registration in the UAE is a structured process governed by the Department of Intellectual Property Rights (DIPR) and follows a first-to-file system. This means that the first person or company to file an application gets the exclusive rights—regardless of prior use.
Here’s a step-by-step overview of the UAE trademark registration process:
-
1. Confirm Trademark Availability
EmiratesTrademark.com will conduct a comprehensive trademark search to ensure your brand name is unique and eligible for registration in the UAE. -
2. File the Trademark Application
We will submit the application to the DIPR along with all necessary documents through a licensed local representative. -
3. Undergo Mandatory Examination
The DIPR will carry out both formal and substantive examinations to verify compliance. This stage usually takes 9 to 12 months. -
4. Publication & Opposition Period
If the trademark passes examination, it is published in the UAE Official Gazette. A 30–60 day window is provided for third parties to file objections. -
5. Registration & Certificate Issuance
If no objections are received, or if opposition is successfully resolved, the trademark will be officially registered, and a certificate will be issued.
Validity & Renewal:
A UAE trademark is valid for 10 years from the date of application. Renewal is possible six months before expiration, with an additional 6-month grace period available for late renewals.
